Looking outside of the box is always a good thing.

Having trained in a few 'western' JJ styles, it is growingly obvious that many have strong roots in Judo and the underlying principles differ from how JJ was taught 'back in the day' - I don't feel there is a good or bad way to train based on this observation, so long as the style you train in meets your own training needs and desires.  Sometimes, newer is not always better.
