I know Colin Dente was teaching Manchester Uni up until 1995 (and possibly later) after which Richard Goulding was lead instructor for some time (not sure about which bit of '95-2000 he covered as it was before my time). John Allen and Rosi Sexton were teaching the combined Manchester Uni/Manchester Met/UMIST club from, I believe, some point in 2000. Vince Lee joined them in December 2001 when he got his brown and took responsibility for the Manchester Met side of the club from that point onwards. Rosi was still teaching the UMIST side of the club in 2002/03 and the occasional Manchester Uni Friday session while John taught the rest. Mike Davies took over one of the weekly Manchester Uni sessions sometime around then (I believe when Lee Baker took over Liverpool JMU) and Natalie Robinson later took his session in 2003, taking over from John Allen as lead instructor for the 2004/05 academic year.

Keren Curtis was teaching UCLAN from around 2002 until she left to join the army in around 2004-ish? I think Nick Tuley and Dhiren Patel were sharing the teaching after that until Steve Chapman got his brown in December 2005. I think he took over after that.

To my knowledge Preston town has always been taught by Nick Tuley with the assistance of Dhiren Patel (although I can only vouch for 2001 onwards).

Liverpool JMU was definitely taught by Mike Davies for a year in approx 2002/03 then by Lee Baker until Tom (sorry, can't remember his last name) took over as lead instructor in around 2005.

All information has come straight from my brain while I'm sitting in my office so may not be completely accurate.

You might want to e-mail Gareth with all this, as I doubt he'll be checking on here to fill in the gaps...

Cranfield University and Warwick

Postby biggav1992 » Thu Jul 12, 2007 4:20 pm | #5

I taught at Cranfield between these dates

Mid-to-Late 1993 and for a couple of years after I got my Dan in 1995. Suspect this would have meant 1998 at the latest. Unfortunately I cannot remember who I took over from (the name Robin - a brown belt - is ringing a bell, but this may be poor memory!)

Warwick University pre 1990. I started in 1989 and Doug Stewart had been there for at least a couple of years. I'm fairly certain he didn't start the club, but I don't know who did

Thanks,
Gavin

For Wales
Cardiff was the first club opened by Julian Straker Jones who also opened Swansea Uni (1986) and West Glamorgan Institute.  Swansea was taught by Julian, then Tracy Warr then James Hourihan and WGIHE was taught by Julian, Alan Chappell, James Hourihan
James Hourihan set up Leicester University, Leicester Poly, Leicester Town and Leicester Kids club.
Mike Clemons, Mark Williams, James Hourihan and Alan Chappell were all taught by Julian Straker Jones
Warwick University was set up by Julian Straker Jones  and taken over by Doug Stewart.
Simon Shepley was one of the Plymouth Poly crowd as was Simon Parker Leehane, Julian Straker Jones, Dave Walker, Andy McDonnell (big mac), Andy MacDonald (little mac) amongst others

OK I can fill in a few blanks.  For Man uni club, Colin Dente was teaching until summer 1996 when Louise O'Donnell took over for a year (96-97).  At the same time Cath (can't remember her surname) took over Man Met.  Louise then left to go to Reading and Colin took over again (97-98 ).  Colin then left to go to Oxford and Richard Goulding took over (98-99).  Steve Riley was then teaching for a while and I think John Allen took over from him.  Chris Outram was also teaching for a while 95-98ish before he moved down south.
Scary (but lovely)

Uk Ronin - thinking again about Cranfield University - I think it must have started before 1994. I think the CSA don't know that for the first year of my teaching we were at a sports centre in Milton Keynes. I stand by my 1993 start. Who would have thought that memory could be so poor!
